It is supported by The American Book Center, one of the largest sources of American (and British) language books on continental Europe.If you are interested in developing ideas and activities in The Treehut such as Youth Book Clubs, Open Mike evenings for 12-18 year olds or any other initiative, or if you would like to rent the space for courses, seminars or workshops, you are welcome to contact us at treehut@abc.nl. a taste of current events:THREAT: PALESTINIAN POLITICAL PRISONERS IN ISRAEL BY ABEER BAKER Book Events Threat - Palestinian Political Prisoners in Israel - Abeer Baker, Anat Matar Palestinian prisoners charged with security-related offences are immediately taken as a threat to Israel's security. They are seen as potential, if not actual, suicide bombers. This stereotype ignores the political nature of the Palestinian prisoners' actions and their desire for liberty. By highlighting the various images of Palestinian prisoners in the Israel-Palestine conflict, Abeer Baker and Anat Matar chart their changing fortunes. Essays written by prisoners, ex-prisoners, Human rights defenders, lawyers and academic researchers analyse the political nature of imprisonment and Israeli attitudes towards Palestinian prisoners. These contributions deal with the prisoners' status within Palestinian society, the conditions of their imprisonment and various legal procedures used by the Israeli military courts in order to criminalise and de-politicise them. Also addressed are Israel's breaches of international treaties in its treatment of the Palestinian prisoners, practices of torture and solitary confinement, exchange deals and prospects for release. This is a unique intervention within Middle East studies that will inspire those working in human rights, international law and the peace process. Abeer Baker is a Palestinian Citizen of Israel practicing Human Rights. Chair of the Legal Clinic for Prisoners Rights, in the Law Faculty of Haifa University. A (former) senior lawyer with Adalah: The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel. Baker works mainly on litigating Palestinian Human Rights, mainly in cases of group discrimination, political rights, prisoners and detainees' rights and victims of security forces brutality. date: May 24, 2012 time: 17:30 to 19:30 cost: Free THEATRESPORTS ASSOCIATION IMPROFESSIONEEL IN DUTCH Courses Theatresports association Improfessioneel will organise a theatresports course at the ABC Treehut. Theatresports is a form of improvisational theatre, which uses the format of a competition for dramatic effect.
